Overview:

The 3rd Panzer Division was the supporting effort of 48th Panzer Corps, attacking on the west flank of the Gross Deutschland and 11th Panzer Divisions. The 3rd Panzer Division’s soldiers were very well trained and experienced. The made steady progress on the opening days of the operation, but were unable to make any type of a significant breakthrough. The armor had raced for a bridge crossing over the Pena River, only to have it blown in their face. They found an alternate route and continued to push north. They had succeeded in significantly depleting units of the 22nd Guards Rifle Corps, which were pulled back. However, elements of the 3rd Mechanized Corps had already been committed and occupied a defensive strongpoint in the 2nd echelon with fortified buildings, trenches and bunkers.

2024-09-12(A) Jeff B vs Magnus Rimvall Russian win9.5 hrsFiguring the obvious approach through the grainfield would be fraught with mines and wire, I thought I'd try an atypical approach and attack from the southwest across the open ground and into the brush-filled gully. I took my fair share of lumps of course, the biggest being my FT fizzling out but overall was happy upon reaching it with a fair degree of force. But Turn 2 had the game-changing moves of one of my tanks smashing L6 to rubble, and then being flamed by one of the guns in the wheatfield. Despite being moist, the flame quickly spread to the field and the adjacent hexes. Top that off with a minefield in K8 and my men really had a limited area to push through with the attack. Plus having lost another tank to CC reaction fire, and with another being shocked, I was down to one tank. With over 40% of the game over and having discovered only 1/12 of the fortified buildings this looked like a foregone conclusion. But I pressed on, forced to swing the majority of my attack the long way looping around west. With my UK tank recovering, Turn 4 cost the Russians dearly, but I had to burn all but one of my remaining DCs to do it. Turn 5 saw me successfully sweep across the road and evict his men from the three buildings in the NW part of the board, but one of my much-needed tanks mired, and I had to push men into the open ground south of the burning wheat to try and threaten from that direction. The tank freed itself next turn, but the other fell into a cellar. I did gain a foothold east of the wheat though with a few men at least. But I would need to take 7 buildings on my last turn, a tall task indeed. Throwing everything I had at him, I was able to put myself in a position to win by being victorious in 2/4 CCs (all with decent odds). When I failed all of them it was game over. A tough ask with all those fortified buildings, but I feel had L6 not rubbled and the fires not spread so quickly I would've prevailed.
