Overview:

Lt. Gen. Fujioka’s 62nd Division was disintegrating as it frantically attempted to slow the American 1st Marine Division in its drive south toward Dakeshi. A deep draw in front of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines was the centerpiece in Fujioka’s Awacha defense. The 1st Battalion, 5th Marines methodically moved forward 300 yards to the edge of the draw. Heavy Japanese fire from a ridge pinned Headquarters Company in a valley. Recognizing the danger to his unit, PFC Albert Schwab quickly took action and earned the Medal of Honor.

2022-11-16(D) Simon Staniforth vs Ian Ainsworth Japanese winYou feel overwhelmed by all those 7-6-8 USMC squad so play to the Japanese strengths revealing the PBs as late as possible. I kept a crew/MMG in the game through skulking and they were able to re-man one of the PBs in my last turn with the 9-1 / 4-4-7 in a Trench above. The USMC were unable to clear these guys despite firing pretty much everything they had left at them so no opportunity to CC the PB crew who remained GO and thus a Japanese win

2018-02-28(D) X von Marwitz vs Ernst Knauth Japanese winIn this small 5.5 turn PTO action a hard-ass Marine force has to storm a hill and prevent any Japanese with SW being Good Order. The Japanese have some Treches and Pillboxes (with Tunnels) to hole up in, PTO terrain, though, is NOT in effect.
I had the Japanese in our game and think this one is hard to play as for them because it is not easy to decide where to set up their strongpoints. And the Japanese will have trouble to fall back with some of their units that are required to set up a little further towards the Marines.
I was a little lucky that the Marines moved very close to what I had anticipated. Some HIP Japanese ambushed a stack of Marines and killed one 768 stacked with the Hero and his FT. Doh! The FT survived, but of course losing the hero further privileged by SSR for the FT was a blow and this Ambush screwed up US plans for the next turn. The problem for the Japanese remained that if they expose themselves to the evil firepower of the Marines, they will pay dearly. But if they don't, the Marines will gain ground faster than the Japanese like. By the end of Turn 3, the Marines were on level 1 hill hexes of the hill mass in force and my Japanese had had to relocate to avoid their point blank fire in the upcoming turn.
During US Turn 4, the Marines were quite unlucky with Infantry Smoke and when they attempted to move up to some level 2 hill hexes, I managed to break their 9-2, wound their 8-1 and break a 768, 2x 348 and to leave another 768 stuck in open ground. This, of course, caused consternation as it would cost the Marines a turn to recover if things would go well and bring them into time constraints in any case. My opponent decided to concede at that point, as it appeared difficult to turn the game around. So the Japanese remained king of the hill.
