Overview:

Despite not having been informed of the planning and launching of “Barbarossa”, Mussolini immediately offered to send troops to Russia to support his Axis “partner”. A corps-sized force was accepted by the Germans and the 62,000 strong Corpo Spedzione Italiano in Russia (CSIR) was sent under the command of Lt.-Gen. Messe. In early August, the first units of the CSIR, mainly from the “Pasubio” semi-motorized division, were ready to enter the line, during the German-Hungarian drive on the Black Sea port of Nikolaiev. The vanguard of the division, under Col. Chiaramonti, first encountered Soviet rearguard units along the Bug River on the 11th August. The following day, the regiment stumbled on more serious resistance around the Jasnaja Poljana village. Then, following heavy fighting, the Italians repulsed the Russian riflemen.

Other than my cowering unit in the south, my vanguard force held up much better than planned. In fact my conscript in the north almost single handedly held off the Italians on that part of the board the whole game. Due to my cowering unit in the south however he was able to sneak some Italians by to render my eventual reinforcements in that area impotent. But the Italians do not have a huge numerical advantage so that just caused me to shift more protection to T9. This was made all the better because it is so far from the reinforcing Germans. He eventually did take this with the Germans (who passed it off to the one remaining Italian unit on that part of the board), but there was no way he could take L6, which was guarded by the ACs and infantry manning the wall.
