Overview:

The 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment was one of the assault forces for the launching of Operation Cobra. Initially they saw little resistance and quickly made gains of several kilometers. Nearing St. Lô-Periers Highway, they began to hit pockets of tough resistance that were unaffected by the massive carpet bombing. However, the armor support was unable to keep up with the infantry due to the thick bocage and bomb craters on the roads. The German defense in the area was a mixed bunch of remnants from the 14th Fallschirmjäger Division, as well as several other units fighting under the flag of the Fallschirmjäger Division. K Company, maneuvering on the flank, hit a strongpoint near a sunken road that contained 2 dug-in tanks about 400 meters south of the highway. Supporting armor was nowhere to be found. The battalion commander did not want to wait for the armor and gave commands for the attack. He also rejected the support of tank destroyers, as they would have to maneuver the point-blank range to get a shot. He sent his men in against the tanks.

2018-01-12(D) Andy Goldin vs Raymond Woloszyn German winRay and I played at Winter Offensive 2018. As the defender, I wanted to slow him down and get those FFMO shots on him while he entered. I also wanted to deny him key woods locations thereby limiting his rally locations. The latter was accomplished by positioning the wire counters in AA10, G7 and of course in the middle of the road at EE5. I had misunderstood the combination of dug-in tank and hedge rules, and placed a tank at Y2, where -- as I discovered -- it could only see adjacent on account of the sunken road. Although I couldn't get any long range shots, this helped me later. I had some good rolls on my shots as he entered the board. Even so, I was surprised at how quickly Ray was able to move in for the kill. He broke my screening units in the first series of hedgerows and was able to put fire on my main line of defense (generally along the Y5 road) on Turn 3. I thought my goose was cooked.
Ray managed to malf two of his bazookas and I managed to repulse his first rush at my top most tank (as you look at the map online here). By Turn 4, most of my infantry was broken and cowering on the left most side of the board and I was able to manage to offer only sporadic rifle fire to protect the tanks. Because of where I had positioned them, he had to destroy at least one of the tanks to win. At that point the tanks took turns on MA rate tears, driving off a few of the Americans. His couple of remaining BAZ shots went wide, or low, and luckily had no effect. The tanks were able to chase off the last turn of his low-likelihood of success infantry rushes, getting me a very narrowly won game. I attribute my success to (what turned out to be) effective placement of wire and tanks, and Ray not getting a single hit with his bazookas despite the half dozen shots he took on them.

I think it offers many good defensive setups (as long as you keep in mind the attack can come from 3 directions simultaneously). Actually, it is possible to win by ignoring the tanks and just taking ground. But that would require some exceptionally good luck.

I immediately fell for Jeff's setup and moved onto a northern section of the board guarded by the three wire hexes, slowing down my plan of attack by a whole turn. Luckily, Jeff's first fire for the game generated an American sniper, who promptly killed the 8-1 German leader and breaking the squad with the MMG guarding the 4 VP crossroads.

I had the crews and a deployed squad manning the 4 bazookas. 2 came in from the east and two from the west. The two from the west were killed by one of the dug in tanks. Once both tanks were discovered, it was a cat & mouse game to get the other bazookas into position. The left most bazooka missed it's initial shot. The tank returned fire, breaking it's main armament. The following phase, the bazooka itself broke down. The remaining bazooka found it's mark, burning the other tank on a turret hit behind the bocage. With that tank out of action and the German infantry hindered by the smoke, an American Squad was able to make it's way over to one of the sunken road victory hexes. Finally, the crew which broke it's bazooka was able to advance into the 4 VP crossroad hexes and that was the game. The Germans had no infantry to retake the hexes gained by the Americans.
2009-11-05(A) Paul Jones vs Damian Maher American winLots of US squads but difficult attacking terrain makes it tough to get forwards. Getting bazookas up to the Pz IVs in one piece seems to be key.
