Overview:

STAVKA (the Soviet high command), detached the Central Front's 3rd Tank Army to the Voronezh Front to race the weakening Germans to the Dnieper, to save the wheat crop from the German scorched earth policy, and to achieve strategic or operational river bridgeheads before a German defence could stabilize there. The 3rd Tank Army, plunging headlong, reached the river on the night of 21–22 September and, on the 23rd, Soviet infantry forces crossed by swimming and by using makeshift rafts to secure small, fragile bridgeheads, opposed only by 120 German Cherkassy flak academy NCO candidates and the hard-pressed 19th Panzer Division Reconnaissance Battalion. Those forces were the only Germans within 60 km of the Dnieper loop. Only a heavy German air attack and a lack of bridging equipment kept Soviet heavy weaponry from crossing and expanding the bridgehead. STAVKA, sensing a critical juncture, ordered a hasty airborne corps assault to increase the size of the bridgehead before the Germans could counterattack. On the 21st, the Voronezh Front's 1st, 3rd and 5th Guards Airborne Brigades got the urgent call to secure, on the 23rd, a bridgehead perimeter 15 to 20 km wide and 30 km deep on the Dnieper loop between Kaniv and Rzhishchev, while Front elements forced the river. Soviet aerial photography, suspended for several days by bad weather, had missed the strong reinforcement of the area, early that afternoon. Lead aircraft, disgorging paratroopers over Dubari at 1930, came under small arms, machine gun, and quad-20 anti-aircraft fire from the armored personnel carrier battalion (Pioneers) of the 73rd Panzer Grenadier Regiment and elements of the division staff of 19th Panzer Division. Some paratroops began returning fire and throwing grenades even before landing; trailing aircraft accelerated, climbed and evaded, dropping wide. Of 4,575 men dropped (seventy percent of the planned number, and just 1,525 from 5th Brigade), some 2,300 eventually assembled into 43 ad-hoc groups, with missions abandoned as hopeless, and spent most of their time seeking supplies not yet destroyed by the Germans. Others joined with the nine partisan groups operating in the area. About 230 made it over (or out of) the Dnieper to Front units (or were originally dropped there).

2025-07-29(D) Jeff B vs Scott Sherer Russian win17 hrsBig, old school night scenario. First turn went by so quickly I forgot to save or run a log, but somewhere along the line NVR dropped to 2. First batch of Russians dropped mostly up top, with a couple stragglers landing on the bottom of Board 33. The SWs landed far off course, a theme that would continue the entire game. Not being able to use these as the Germans was both a bit baffling and frustrating, though with night rules the way they are that would've been an extremely dangerous proposition regardless. I figured my best chance to slow him down would be to try to pick off the errant landers the first couple of turns before they could meet up with others, so I sent the SdKfz 7/1 and a full squad to deal with them. I of course had stripped down all my HTs of their weaponry to get as many FL-capable weapons in play as possible. The second batch of Russians landed mostly on the SE side of Board 48, but some drifted as far as the bottom of board 5 and the north part of Board 33. With the partisans also on the move it was time to pull back and circle the wagons, though I actually went a bit on the offensive in the far west. My SdKfz broke its MA. Turn 4 saw the NVR drop further yet to 1, a fact that certainly didn't play to my advantage. My lack of leaders (and really bodies in general, as well as my terrible luck) severely handicapped my starshell abilities. This would ultimately prove my undoing in the end. The third batch of Russians dropped mostly on the northern parts of Boards 33/48. My SdKfz thankfully repaired, as that, my FT HT, and my stripped-out HMG were my three biggest assets. Turn 5's paratroops fell mostly in the north of Board 5. I had yet to sustain a loss, but the force amassing on Board 48 and the flanks of Board 33 was becoming scary. Another aspect that became extremely frustrating were the night rout rules. Without surrender I was constantly having to branch off units I couldn't spare to continue to DM any brokies. Turn 6's (and thankfully last) batch of Russians finally saw board 18 receive some reinforcements when they dropped mostly in the north. I finally saw my first casualty when a crew and LMG were eliminated (CC?), and my SdKfz crew was forced to abandon ship. Turn 7 saw the Russians make their big move, grabbing one of the VC hexes on board 33. The meager German force was reduced by two HS and a crew, and all I dished out in return were a few discovered dummies. Turn 8 continued the German decimation, with another HS, crew, 9-1, and jeep lost. This time I dished out some punishment, to the tune of 1.5 squads and a hero, but the Russians crushed forward and grabbed another VC hex. When I failed to find a single starshell on Turn 9 my only chance would've been to rush foolishly into the arms of numerous Russians/Partisans and I called it a day. The result was not at all unexpected, as I just don't see the Germans standing much of a chance in this one. If it weren't for the fact he had a lot of errant drops and lack of SWs it would've been over much sooner. As it was it turned into a closer/more fun game than I was expecting. I really think a better VC would to have the Russians at least have to capture all three VC hexes in a certain area, and even that will most likely prove no problem for them.
2021-09-13(D) Richard Jenulis vs Brent Morris Russian winWhat a wild game this was. The Russian Wings landed as follow: 33CC4, 33Z5, 18F5, 48FF3, 33Q2, & 18BB3. Despite crazy drifts and many squads deploying on landing, the Russias had a pretty condensed landing and were able to launch one very large attack against the eastern crossroads, and two moderate size attacks against the western. A failed MC by the Armored Car crew left a single pinned Russian HS out of reach in a victory hex for the Russian win. A very fun VASL scenario to play.
