Overview:
The Marine 4th Raider Battalion was assigned the mission of clearing Viru Harbor. P and O Companies landed in the night at Regi, and fought a pair of rearguard actions as it marched towards Viru Harbor. On the 29th, Lt Devillo Brown was sent down a side trail towards the village of Tombe. The team soon encountered a ridge running across their line of march. On one side was the Choi River, the other was an impassable swamp. The Marines were forced to cross a wide area of kunai as they approached the ridge. As the lead forces mounted the base of the slope, Japanese machineguns opened fire.Attacker: American (USMC) (Elements of P Co. 4th Raider Battalion)
