Overview:
Following the successful landings of the previous day, Allied patrols cautiously began moving northward to expand the beachhead. Vital to the success of the operation was securing all 13 bridges over the Mussolini Canal and its western branch. All the bridges were quickly taken by patrols of the US 3rd Infantry Division within the first 24 hours of the landing. Yet early on the 23rd elements of the Hermann Göring Panzer Parachute Division began to arrive to contest American control, particularly of the critical Bridge Number 8, which would give the Allies access to the town of Cisterna di Littoria. Combined armor and infantry forces of the Hermann Goering Division had retaken the bridge by the afternoon of the 23rd. At 8:15 PM on the 23d, Company E, 30th Infantry Regiment, with the help of tanks and tank destroyers, was dispatched to drive the Germans back across the canal.Attacker: American (Co. E, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment)
