Overview:

Following the successful breakout from the La Bassee Canal, the leading elements of the 7th Panzer Division pushed north toward Lille from which elements of the B.E.F. were withdrawing to the Dunkirk perimeter. Attempting to seal off the western exists from Lille, deploying reconnaissance elements began to encounter the British exodus, confronting a force of lorries under armed escort.
