Overview:

In September 1942, the British decided to capture the town of Akyab at the head of the Kaladan and Mayu Rivers. The Japanese 33rd Division had set up a series of defensive lines consisting of wire entanglements, minefields, pillboxes and similar fortifications. The British advanced down the Arakan peninsula for a month and were exhausted. The Japanese occupied positions at Laung-chaung, which had a ravine that was a natural anti-tank barrier. In this spot for 50 days, the Japanese held off attack after attack by massed battalions of the 14th Indian Division. On February 1st, the 55th Brigade attacked out of the jungle with Valentine tanks in support.
