Overview:
During the night of the 16th, the 16th Lwowska Rifle Battalion managed to seize Phantom Ridge from the German 2nd Battalion of the 100th Mountain Regiment. Much confused fighting occurred throughout the night and a counterattack by the Germans just before dawn failed to dislodge the Poles. By dawn’s early light, a squadron of the 4th Polish Armored Regiment began to ascend Phantom Ridge, encountering serious terrain obstacles. At the same time, 17th Lwowska Rifle Battalion passed through the 16th to attack Colle St. Angelo. The Battalion stormed forward quickly and overwhelmed the defenders but were mauled by artillery fire as they attempted to reach the forward positions. A series of sharp German counterattack almost pushed the off but the Pole Tanks crested Phantom Ridge and lent their fire.Attacker: Polish (Elements of the 16th, 17th and 18th Lwowska Rifle Battalions, 5th Kresowa Division)
