Overview:
On 22 April the term "Item Pocket" had come into use for the first time. Enemy positions had been almost fully developed and four problems were recognized - building a bridge across Anderson's Gulch, and the elimination of enemy positions on Ryan's Ridge, Gusukuma and in the Pocket itself. Despite this clarity, a series of costly and inconclusive actions followed on 22-24 April. On 25 April, the ‘forgotten' Captain Bernard Ryan was ordered to seize Ryan's Ridge. Following an abortive attack attempt, Lieutenant Colonel Claire was sacked and replaced by Major Herman M. Lutz, who gave Ryan full control over the seizure of the ridge. Ryan organized artillery support, and arranged direct anti-tank gun fire in support from the south slopes of Fox Ridge. Smoke would be laid into the pocket to obscure enemy observation. Ryan's men were briefed to follow friendly artillery up the ridge, covering the open ground between Fox Ridge and Ryan's Ridge screened by smoke. The first and second platoons led by Lieutenant Martin L. Pinson and Lieutenant John M. Flesche, making the ridge on a dead run.Attacker: Japanese (21st Independent Battalion, 64th Infantry Brigade, 62nd Infantry Division)
Defender: American (1st and 2nd Platoons, 'F' Company, 2nd Battalion, 165th Infantry Regiment)
