Overview:

Operation Citadel had begun, but instead of the desired lightning breakthrough, fighting had taken on the characteristics of World War I trench warfare. In four days of grueling combat, the XLI Panzer Corps had managed to penetrate the defenses of the Soviet 13th Army to only a depth of five miles. The German corps, now being slowly forced onto the defensive by increasing enemy pressure, needed to secure a strong position on which to anchor its left flank and to free the mobile elements. Such a spot was the commanding height of Hill 253.5 near the village of Ponyri. On 9 July, the Germans stormed and captured Hill 239.8 and, to exploit this success, an assault on 253.5 was ordered.

2026-10-12(A) Lee Hyde vs Grant Hewitt German winExciting Game with Germans with some lucky shots to shutdown the Russian MMG's in T1, which gave the Germans an early assist. Well placed Wire, and Mines took out the 2 Halftracks which were pushed forward as sacrificial units. The Russian Sniper was active and killed the Leader controlling the Radio which stopped German OBA early on, with the Germans subsequently capturing the Russian radio before their OBA proved too effective. Stukas arrived late, and Russian FB's arrived the next turn. Stukas were able to take out one KV, as well as the reinforcing Leader with Assault Squad hiding in a Wooden Building, as they sought to drop their bombs before being jumped. Russians went straight into dogfight 3 on 3 as we both rolled good for numbers. Unbelievably the Stukas won the Dogfight forcing 2 Russians into Recall for the loss of one Stuka to Recall. At this point the Russians resigned holding the last 2 Level 3 hexes, but with only one Leader, one KV and not much infantry the German untouched tanks would likely take full control with the 3 turns remaining. Fun game and definitely up for a replay in the future.

Russian reinforcements tried to hold the two last hill 3 hexes not in German possession. However, it was hopeless, the last Russian MMCs and AFVs were destroyed in the last turn. Well played Karim !
